Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees when they search for a business like yours. Before they ever visit your website, they see your name, rating, photos, opening hours and the buttons to call or get directions. A well-optimized profile turns that first look into a phone call, a visit or a message.
This guide walks through every important part of your profile, section by section, with practical tips for businesses in Pakistan. If you have not claimed your profile yet, start with my local SEO guide for small businesses, then come back here to optimize it.

Why Google Business Profile optimization matters
Google decides which businesses to show in local results based on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move closer to every customer, but you can make your profile as relevant and trustworthy as possible. A complete, accurate and active profile gives Google more reasons to show you, and gives customers more reasons to choose you over the business listed next to you.
Optimization is not about tricks. It is about giving accurate information in every field, keeping it up to date, and showing real proof that you are a genuine, active business.
1. Business name: use your real name only
Your business name on Google should match the name customers see in the real world: on your signboard, your shop front, your invoices and your registration documents.
- Do not add keywords or locations such as “Best Plumber Lahore” or “Cheap Laptops Karachi” to the name. This is against Google’s guidelines, competitors can report it, and it is a common reason for suspensions.
- Keep the same spelling everywhere, including on your website, Facebook page and other listings.
- If you genuinely rebrand, update the signboard and website first, then the profile.
2. Categories: the most important choice on your profile
Your primary category tells Google what kind of business you are, and it strongly affects which searches you appear for. You can add up to nine secondary categories, but only for services you really offer.
- Choose the most specific primary category that describes your core business, for example “Pediatrician” instead of just “Doctor”, or “Real estate agency” instead of “Consultant”.
- Look at the businesses that rank well for your main search and note their categories. You can see a competitor’s primary category under their name on Google Maps.
- Add secondary categories only where they fit. Too many loosely related categories make your profile less clear, not more visible.
- Review your categories every few months. Google adds new categories over time, and a more accurate one may become available.
3. Address and service area
If customers visit your premises, show your full address, and make sure the map pin sits exactly on your building. In Pakistan, adding the block, sector, phase or main road helps people find you, especially in large housing societies and busy markets.
If you visit customers instead, such as AC repair, home tuition, cleaning or solar installation, set up a service-area business. Hide your home address and list the cities or areas you actually serve. Google allows up to 20 service areas; list the places where you really work rather than every city in the country.
4. Opening hours, including special hours
Wrong hours are one of the quickest ways to lose a customer’s trust. Set your regular hours, then:
- Add special hours for Ramadan, Eid, Independence Day and other holidays well in advance.
- Use more hours where relevant, for example separate delivery, pickup or appointment hours.
- If you close temporarily, mark the profile as temporarily closed instead of deleting it.
5. Phone number, website and appointment links
- Use a phone number that someone answers during business hours. A number that rings out sends customers straight to the next business.
- Link to the most relevant page of your website. For a single-location business that is usually the home page; for a business with several branches, link each profile to that branch’s page.
- If customers book appointments, add an appointment or booking link so they can book in one step.
6. Business description
You have up to 750 characters to describe your business. Use them to tell customers, in plain language, what you do, who you help, where you work and what makes you different.
- Put the most important information in the first two sentences, because that is what most people read.
- Mention your main services and the areas you serve naturally, without repeating keywords.
- Do not include links, phone numbers, or promotional claims you cannot support.
A simple structure that worksWhat you do and who for. Where you are based and the areas you serve. Two or three of your main services. Why customers choose you, such as experience, a specialisation or the way you work. How to get in touch.
7. Services and products
The services and products sections help Google match your profile to more specific searches, and they show customers exactly what you offer.
- List each main service separately, using the words customers search for.
- Add a short, clear description to each service explaining what is included.
- Shops and restaurants can use the products section to show popular items with photos.
8. Attributes
Attributes are small details such as wheelchair access, online appointments, women-led, Wi-Fi or parking. The options depend on your category. Select every attribute that is true for your business; they help customers decide and can help you appear for more specific searches.
9. Photos and videos
Photos are one of the main things customers look at when comparing businesses. Real, recent photos show that you are active and help customers recognise you when they arrive.
- Logo and cover photo: add a clear logo and a cover photo that represents your business well.
- Exterior: photograph your shop front from the street, from the direction most customers approach, so it is easy to find.
- Interior, team and work: show your space, your people and examples of your work or products.
- Short videos of your premises or work in progress can add extra trust.
- Avoid stock photos, heavy filters and images with large text or phone numbers on them.
- Add new photos regularly, for example after finishing a project or refreshing your premises.
10. Posts and updates
Google Business Profile lets you publish updates, offers and events. They appear on your profile and show customers that the business is active.
- Share news, seasonal offers (around Ramadan, Eid or the new school year), events and new services.
- Use a real photo and a clear button such as “Call now”, “Book” or “Learn more”.
- Keep each post focused on one message, and aim to post regularly rather than in occasional bursts.
11. Reviews: ask, reply and stay within the rules
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether customers trust you. Focus on a steady flow of genuine reviews:
- Ask satisfied customers soon after a good experience, in person or with a short WhatsApp message that includes your direct review link.
- Reply to every review. Thank people by name and, for negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the issue and offer to resolve it.
- Never buy reviews, write them yourself, ask staff or family to post them, or offer discounts in exchange. These practices break Google’s policies and can lead to removed reviews or a restricted profile.
- If you receive a review that breaks Google’s policies, such as spam or offensive content, you can report it from your profile.
12. Use performance insights to improve
Your profile’s performance report shows how many people viewed your profile, the searches they used, and how many called, asked for directions, visited your website or sent a message. Check it monthly:
- Look at the search terms. If people find you for services you do not list, add them; if important services never appear, strengthen them on your profile and website.
- Compare calls and direction requests month by month, rather than reacting to daily changes.
- Combine this with Google Search Console data from your website for a fuller picture.
How to avoid profile suspensions
A suspended profile disappears from Google Maps, often at the worst possible time. Most suspensions come from a few avoidable mistakes:
- Keywords or locations added to the business name
- Virtual offices, co-working addresses or addresses where the business does not really operate
- More than one profile for the same business at the same location
- Sudden large changes to the name, address and category at the same time
- Fake or incentivised reviews
If your profile is suspended, fix the cause first, then submit an appeal with clear evidence such as photos of your signboard, a utility bill or business registration. If your business is missing from Maps for other reasons, see why your business isn’t showing on Google Maps.
